Introduction:
In this case study, I delve into the process of crafting a persuasive sales letter for Multiplication Secrets, an educational product designed to help kids learn and memorize multiplication facts. By conducting thorough research and addressing the pain points of parents and children, I aimed to create a compelling sales pitch that resonates with the target audience.
Researching the Target Audience:
To start, I defined the target audience as parents with children aged 7 to 11.
Understanding that parents would be the primary purchasers, I focused my marketing efforts on capturing their attention. Taking into account the age range and location (primarily the US), I tailored my targeting accordingly.
Understanding the Pain Points:
To gain deeper insights into the pain points of my target demographic, I conducted a survey of over 100 parents. This Ryan Levesque-style survey helped me uncover the most pressing challenges faced by parents when it comes to teaching multiplication to their children. The identified pain points included:
- Frustration and impatience in children regarding their lack of progress
- Difficulty in motivating kids, often met with excuses like relying on calculators
- Challenges in keeping children focused during practice sessions
- Struggles with memorizing multiplication facts for larger digits
- Generation gap: Parents feeling out of sync with the way math is taught today
- Limited mental recall in children hindering concept retention
- Dissatisfaction with other online courses lacking necessary resources and support
- Unique learning styles of children leading to insufficient personal attention in classrooms

The Video Sales Letter Framework:
When crafting a sales letter, the most important part is getting the pain points right for your target audience and then build your offer around solving those pain points.
Once you've done that, all you need to do is pick a framework to start testing with... of which there are tons to choose from... AIDA, The 4 P's. FAB... the list goes on.
I've always like Jim Edwards, so to address my target audiences pain points, I went with his VSL framework, a proven method for crafting persuasive copy. The framework consisted of the following steps:
- Open with a shocking statement
- Identify the problem and highlight its significance
- Agitate the problem to evoke strong emotions
- Intensify the problem, pushing it beyond the threshold
- Introduce the solution to capture interest
- Establish credibility and reasons to trust the product
- Provide proof of the product's effectiveness
- List the specific benefits customers will gain from the purchase
- Create a sense of urgency and specific reasons to act immediately
- Close with a compelling call to action
After plugging everything in, I took some time to tweak the sales letter. It doesn't follow Jim's framework to the T, but it's pretty close.
